Growing Up in Nazi Germany
Author Anneliese Heider Tisdale shared stories of growing up in Nazi Germany at a June 28, 2015, reading and book signing sponsored by Deutschheim. Tisdale is the author of “Christmas Trees Lit the Sky,” a reference to the red and green flares the Allies used during World War II bombing raids. Sprinkled with old German recipes, her memoir describes life in Munich before and during Adolf Hitler’s rise to power.
Tisdale came to the United States as a war bride in 1947. After graduating from the University of Iowa, she taught German and French in Cedar Rapids schools for almost 30 years. Her book began as a three-ring binder of her mother’s German recipes to hand down to her children and then grew into a memoir of growing up in Germany during the war.
“You can’t image what it’s like to have the war on your soil unless you’ve lived through it,” she says.
