Symposiums on the Shared History of Germans and African Americans

At three events around the state historians and scholars discussed the relationships between German immigrants and African Americans before, during and after the Civil War.

Events were followed by two major community engagement activities. Local citizens were asked to share family stories about cross-cultural relationships and will had an opportunity to participate in small-group dialog sessions. Stories were shared at “Circle of Neighbors” sessions. 

The Verein was pround to initiate these events with  support from Visit Hermann, Jim’s Journey: The Huck Finn Freedom Center in Hannibal, the Warren County Historical Society, and the Jefferson City Community Center.
